Elements of Nature

The whole existence is made of five elements. These five elements are earth as geomagnetic energy, water as gravitational energy, fire as solar energy, air as wind energy and space as celestial radiation, i.e. influence of the planets on us. These natural phenomena have a powerful influence on us and our environment. Vastu science tunes our buildings to these forces of nature.

East and north are considered auspicious cardinal directions because of the receiving of beneficial ultraviolet solar rays from the morning sun and geomagnetic energy from the direction of the North Pole. Therefore, using the principles of Vastu science, we protect ourselves from harmful solar rays coming from the South and the West and we open our buildings toward the sources of life supportive energy in the North and the East.

Everything in nature is in such a perfect balance until the moment we build a structure and violate elemental harmony. Vastu is the discipline that restores that balance.

Origin of Vastu

Vastu is a science of building that is coming from the source of all-encompassing ancient knowledge that brought to light Yoga, Meditation, Ayurveda (traditional Indian medicine), Jyotish (Vedic astrology), etc.

Archeological discovery of an old prosperous vastu-designed city, Mohenjo-daro, the largest settlements of the ancient Indus Valley Civilisation, and one of the world’s earliest major cities, contemporaneous with the civilizations of ancient Egypt, Mesopotamia, Minoan Crete, and Norte Chico, indicates Vastu origin.

The urban structure followed a strict grid system that was aligned to cardinal directions. Streets were directed north-south and east-west, and there was an open space in the center with a temple. All houses had a rectangular shape with the open courtyard in the center that served as a natural cooler during the summer and it captured sunlight during the winter.

Vastu vs Feng Shui

In a period of history when Buddhism was introduced to China, along with new religion, knowledge of Vastu was brought from ancient India.  Over time it was adjusted to local culture and climate and became known as Feng Shui.

Vastu Shastra is based on the correlation between cardinal directions and forces of nature while Feng Shui is based on local geographic considerations and traditions. In Vastu science both north direction, the source of positive magnetic energy, and east direction, the source of positive solar energy, are considered favorable. In contrast, in Feng Shui, north direction is generally regarded as inauspicious. This is because, in China, north direction is where the sands and cold winds from Mongolia blow from. In Feng Shui, south and southeast directions are generally considered propitious as the warmth of the sun can be felt from these directions.

The goal of Vastu and Feng Shui is the same. They both aim to eliminate the stress in the buildings, uplift the life-supporting energy and allows its natural flow.

Vastu is an ancient science of organizing building compositions to create a dynamic balance between the form and the energy. Its goal is to align our man-made structures with forces of nature so that harmonious conditions are created for building occupants.
